Boston legends Slaine and Statik Selektah reunite for “A New State of Grace”, the highly anticipated follow-up to their 2011 collaborative album “A State of Grace”. Fourteen years later, the duo has returned with an 11-track record that captures the energy of the original while carrying the weight, wisdom, and scars of everything that’s happened since.

“It feels like a homecoming as far as going back to where it started,” says Statik. “Me and Slaine got over 20 years of friendship and a lot of musical history.” Slaine echoes that sentiment, highlighting the trust and growth between them: “At this stage of the game, I really only work with my good friends musically. It’s a beautiful thing to do a project with Stat. My respect for him is top tier.”

That chemistry is evident across the album. There’s no filler — just sharp lyricism and signature Statik production, from the opening title track to standout cuts like “Listen Up” and “World Don’t Stop,” where Slaine balances reflections on life and maturity with his trademark grit and bravado.

The guest list is just as heavy: Ill Bill shows up on the brassy “Cancel Culture” before rejoining Slaine alongside Paul Wall on the funky “Coka Grillz.” O.C. and Masta Ace trade verses with him on “The Real Shit,” a head-nodding anthem that cements the project’s pedigree. We also see features of note from Kxng Crooked, Millyz, Termanology, Rasheed Chappell and OT The Real. What ties it all together is the hunger running through “A New State of Grace”. It’s not just music—it’s urgency, energy, and a reminder of why this duo’s voice is needed right now.

Motown Priest - Hawthorne

Hawthorne is the powerful new album and short film from Queens-by-way-of-Detroit emcee Motown Priest, a gifted lyricist with a penchant for writing gripping narratives. More than just a gifted storyteller, he also has a phenomenal ear for production that helps to take this project to another level. It’s a cohesive, poignant, and incredible piece of art that serves as a searing look at the world we all live in today.

“This album and film weren’t about cheap moralism or heady preaching, it’s a very simple idea of confronting who we are, and who we are affects the world around us,” Motown Priest explains. “This is where Hawthorne, in both music and film, connects.”

He’s true to his word, too, because the album’s 12 tracks bang just as hard as they make you think. They’re the type of songs you can sit with and unpack, or you can blast them at full volume to make your system rattle—or both.

Tracks like “For Sale” and “The Calogero Effect” boast soulful, nostalgic production that fits their more meditative narratives of succumbing to vices and childhood innocence. On the other hand, “Pandora’s Box” straight-up slaps thanks to its distorted guitars and live drums, while “New Religion” is an aggressive, teeth-gritting banger.

It’s all part of Motown Priest’s plan to fully engage with his audience while delivering one of the year’s best releases, regardless of genre and medium. In addition to the album, Hawthorne exists as a short film that further explores many of the same themes (ceaseless desire, identity, and capitalism) through the visual format. Within its 35-minute runtime, the film follows the same protagonist as the album, a young man who seeks change and fulfillment but doesn’t consider the pain and damage he causes along the way. It makes for a damning look at so many cultural ills, and it couldn’t have arrived at a more fitting time.

Hawthorne is available now for pre-order via DSPs and vinyl in a green color configuration through Get On Down. The digital release is set to drop April 14th release, with vinyl orders shipping on April 7th, all courtesy of O’s Circle in partnership with Brick Records. A short film of the same title—which serves as Priest’s directorial debut—is set to drop the following Friday, April 21st, and utilizes several of the album cuts as the film’s soundtrack.

NEW MUSIC: Motown Priest – “Farewell to Welfare”

Mar24
on March 24, 2023 at 4:41 pm

Queens by way of Detroit emcee/poet, Motown Priest returns with his powerful new single, “Farewell to Welfare.” Through the duration of the track, Priest attempts to unpack the song’s central question and refrain: “How much is a dollar worth?” Backed by equally menacing production, MP uses his incredible lyricism to detail the different and sometimes-brutal ways that people try to escape poverty.

“Farewell to Welfare” can be streamed now through your preferred streaming platform with Motown Priest’s new album, Hawthorne, available now for pre-order via DSPs and vinyl in a green color configuration through Get On Down. NEW VIDEO: Edo.G & Insight Innovates “It Takes Progress”

The ‘Edo.G & Insight Innovates’ album drops on May 28th, 2021!

Pre-order Vinyl & CDs, and pre-save the digital album here: https://smarturl.it/EdoGxInsight

Edo. G & Insight Innovates embrace the thoughtful and meditative message of their latest single, “It Takes Progress,” in their cinematic new video directed by Myster DL for ILL Mannered Films.

The visuals center on the two Boston rap icons, who got the opportunity to post up at a local museum to bring the words of “It Takes Progress” to life. As Insight explains, the track is about more than simply highlighting societal issues; it’s about inspiring the change necessary to make a difference. And what better way to demonstrate how that’s worked through time than to showcase the cultural artifacts of the past?

It’s the perfect backdrop for “It Takes Progress,” its lyrics, and it’s phenomenal production, which gave Insight an opportunity to provide a live, fleshed-out sound. And both he and Edo. G are as inspired as ever here with sincere and sharp rhymes. It’s no surprise, then, that each artist points to this track as one of their favorites off their self-titled collaborative debut, due out May 28.

Check out the visuals and go support their album which is available now for pre-order via download, vinyl and CD through Brick Records.

2020 was a crazy year for everybody. Especially with no touring due to Covid-19. But Termanology made the best of it and spent most of the year working with the likes of Statik Selektah on their group 1982’s album The Quarantine, a new mixtape 50 Bodies 6, and producing two projects for up and coming rapper UFO Fev and R&B singer Mia Jae.

Now in 2021, Termanology continues to build his legacy with his new project GOYA 3. Produced entirely by Shortfyuz, this release is the third installment in the series from the MC+producer combo, following up 2013’s GOYA (also released on Brick Records) and the 2014 self-release Mas GOYA.

“I love the vibe on this new album, because Shotfyuz and I have created a sound together with the “GOYA” brand, combining hard-core punchline rap with underground boom-bap beats, but it is mixed with a heavy Latin influence which sounds different than any of my other projects”.

With over 40 Projects under his belt since his debut mixtape Hood Politicsin 2003, Term continues to stay hungry on GOYA 3, sharing the booth with some of the dopest new lyricists in the game, including NEMS, UFO FEV, ROME STREETZ, JAY ROYALE, ETO, CRIMEAPPLE, NYMLO, OUN P and more, while veterans like LIL FAME of M.O.P., TEK of SMIF-N-WESSUN, CASSIDY, PLANET ASIA, ST. DA SQUAD and TONY TOUCH also make appearances.

GOYA 3 is packed with dope rhymes and powerful production all the way through.

TRACKLIST:

01. Salsa Moves
02. Don Julio (f. UFO Fev & Nems)
03. The Shade (f. Jared Evans)
04. Broad Day (f. Lil Fame of MOP, Rome Streetz, & Jay Royale)
05. T2 (f. TEK of Smif-n-Wessun)
06. Derelict Part 3 (f. Reks, Ea$y Money & Artisin)
